Parts of the former Kollam and Kottayam districts came together on August 17, 1957, to form the incredibly beautiful district known as Alappuzha, or the Venice of the East.
Situated below sea level, it is sandwiched between the Arabian Sea and Vembanad Lake, the longest lake on the Indian Peninsula. Known as the 'Rice Bowl' of Kerala, the Kuttanad region of the Alappuzha district is one of the few places in the world where farming is done below sea level.

Together with the first post office and telegraph office in the former Travancore state, Alappuzha also saw the opening of the first contemporary coir factory for mats and mattings.
