Few Words About Alappuzha...

Parts of the former Kollam and Kottayam districts came together on August 17, 1957, to form the incredibly beautiful district known as Alappuzha, or the Venice of the East.

Situated below sea level, it is sandwiched between the Arabian Sea and Vembanad Lake, the longest lake on the Indian Peninsula. Known as the 'Rice Bowl' of Kerala, the Kuttanad region of the Alappuzha district is one of the few places in the world where farming is done below sea level. Alappuzha was the commercial hub of the former Travancore kingdom during its heyday. Being a well-liked tourist destination, the historically and economically significant Alappuzha Port is expected to be restored by the tourism sector.

The Jain temple, the first Anglican church, Gujarati Street, the Ambalappuzha statue of Lord Buddha (karumadikuttan), the light house, and the historic pier on the Alappuzha beach are just a few of the places that serve as reminders of history.

Together with the first post office and telegraph office in the former Travancore state, Alappuzha also saw the opening of the first contemporary coir factory for mats and mattings.

By road, train, air, and water, one can reach this backwater hub, which is well-known for its beaches, boat races, marine products, and coir industry.
